The dates for Marillion’s 2015 Weekend extravaganzas have been announced:
As with the last batch of Weekend shows in 2013, we’ll be eschewing the larger Dutch event and will be going to the UK weekend. The last UK weekend actually turned out to be probably my favourite of the six Marillion Weekends we’ve done, despite the fact that unlike the Dutch weekends (held at Center Parcs at Port Zelande), the fans are not all staying in one place. Since all the fans gathered in the centre of Wolverhampton, within easy walking distance of the venue (the Civic Hall), there was no loss of the sense of camaraderie that makes the Weekends such a pleasure, even before you start thinking about the gigs.
In fact the Weekends are just so much fun that since 2005, we’ve only seen Marillion a grand total of three times on their ‘regular’ tour dates. The Weekends aren’t just about the fans, although that sense of walking into a pub and immediately knowing half the people in it is a real delight; the gigs themselves are far more unpredictable and celebratory than the regular touring tends to be. Golden oldies are resurrected, oft-unplayed rarities and ‘deep cuts’ are given the time and energy they deserve, and the audiences are that extra shade of crazy that ensures the band feed off them, moving everything up those few extra notches. All the Weekend shows have been special for various reasons, but the three nights at Wolves last year were all *extraordinary*. Since we won’t have seen Marillion for almost exactly two years by the time the 2015 Weekend rolls around, we’re more than ready to experience that 72-hour rollercoaster of great music and good company once again. Really looking forward to it 🙂 .
In fact, there may well be another reason to be grateful for the Weekend – our friend Mike (a long-term Marillion fan) will hopefully be coming over from the US to spend some chill time at Hippy Towers before we all go to next year’s Weekend – which would be Mike’s first. Oh man, is he in for a special time of it or what? 🙂 . Here’s hoping he can make it work. No pressure, mate 😉 .
